Paul Revere’s Copper-Plate Engraved circa 1762 of “His Majesty’s North-Battery, in Boston” Restrike Off the Original Copper Plate
(c. 1762) French & Indian War Colonial Era, “His Majesty’s North-Battery, in Boston” Reprint off Copper-Plate Engraving by Paul Revere, Choice Crisp Near Mint.
This was one of Paul Revere’s first engravings noted as engraved in 1762, and has his engraved name printed within text to the bottom right of the top vignette portion, “P Revere Sculp(tor).” Text at bottom reads, “THE NORTH-BATTERY, BOSTON. / Built in 1646, on the spot now occupied by Battery Wharf, by Maj. Gen. John Leverett, afterwards Gov. of Mass.” This upper engraved portion of the Copper Plate is similar to an even earlier reprint held by the Massachusetts Historical Society, is printed in black ink 5” x 8.75” on a sheet of off-white paper. The vignette at top shows the North End of the city of Boston, Boston Harbor and the buildings and fortifications of the North Battery Fort. Also found in the background is Christ Church prominently displayed, and part of Charlestown beyond the Charles River. There were a few reprints made at various dates in the 1880s and 1890s, though this appears to be of 1900 vintage or thereabouts. It is boldly printed in black upon fresh clean white wove paper. The outer copper plate edge impressions are still faintly embossed, and there are full original wide sheet margins surrounding.
