British astronomer (born 1942) who identified the first clear candidate for a black hole, Cygnus X-1, with his colleague Louise Webster. Three items: an ALS, one page, 5.75 x 8.25, written from the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge and addressed to "Faith," in full: "I have been tidying up and found your letter in a pile of papers—I am so sorry that I put it on one side to deal with later and then didn't. I hope this is not too late and suits your purpose"; and a pair of ballpoint sketches on white 11 x 8.5 sheets, which respectively depict "Black Hole binary star system SS433 with opposing relativistic jets" and "Black Hole binary star system Cygnus X–1," both signed in the lower right corner by Murdin. In overall fine condition.
