Paul Mantz's WWII 14kt Gold ID Bracelet (4 oz). An ornate, personalized ID bracelet that contains a ruby for his Purple Heart along with platinum wings, stars and rank. The enamel and gold bar across the middle stands for the Air Medal, one Asiatic Campaign and ten European Campaigns. The two diamonds (zircons) stand for years of service (they were originally diamonds, but Mrs. Mantz fell on hard times after her husband's death and had them replaced). The back of the bracelet is engraved with his lucky number "46" (the number of outside loops he made to set the world's record) and his name "A Paul Mantz" and dates "1903-1965". Paul Mantz was a legendary figure in the history of US Aviation and in Hollywood. He won the Bendix Air Races three times in a row (1946-48), as a stunt pilot he set the world record in outside rolls in 1930, and as a business man he established the United Air Services airline at Burbank, Calif. airport in the 1930s where his "Honeymoon Express" flight to Las Vegas was extremely popular with the Hollywood crowd. He was also technical advisor to Amelia Earhart in the 1930s and contributed to the meticulous planning that went into her flights. He was killed while filming the final sequences of the movie "Flight of the Phoenix". This ID bracelet was continuously worn by Mantz throughout his life including when he won his Bendix Races and when he was killed. A copy of a picture is included showing him wearing the bracelet. Unique. Ex: the Paul Mantz Estate collection. Additional Paul Mantz memorabilia is located in the Pioneer Aviator section of this sale, beginning with lot 873.
