Certainly the heavy clouds which move slowly across the landscape, gradually displacing the calm of the evening light, suggest this title. Moreover, that the picture has not been seen in public since the late 1930s or early 1940s, when it was acquired by the present owners, also suggests that it may be the Threatening Rain picture. The handling of the paint and the fluid treatment of the foreground bog also suggest a date of execution of the mid-to-late 1930s. If all this is the case, the subject must be a scene in County Kerry, probably near Glenbeigh, where Henry holidayed from time to time. On the reverse, in pencil, are a number of inscriptions, namely: a price, in pounds sterling, of ‘12-12-0’; two numbers, ‘9705’ and ‘0470’; and an indistinct word, possibly ‘Bluhill’ or ‘Blehill’.

Threatening Rain is provisionally numbered 0646 in S.
