French-American traveler and anthropologist (1835–1903) best known as the first modern outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas and the Pygmy people of central Africa. ALS signed “P. B. DuChaillu,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, Langham Hotel letterhead, May 9, 1890. In part: “I have received your very kind note. I wanted to…thank you for the very pleasant evening I had at your house…I am very glad you like ‘The Land of the Midnight Sun.’” In very good condition, with a few spots of toning and moderate soiling along the edges of the adjacent page from mounting remnants on the reverse.
