Patterns 1859 DoubleEagle Judd-257 AU50

Patterns 1859 Pattern Double Eagle. Judd-257. Pollock-305. Rarity-6. Gilded Copper. Reeded Edge. About Uncirculated 50. Quite attractive, in spite of minor handling, a few unobtrusive contact marks and evidence of an old cleaning. Also, there is a linear flaw at the raised right obverse rim, extending from 10 o'clock to 11 o'clock, not intruding on to the surface of the coin, probably as struck. Very likely, this classic Pattern double eagle was carried as a pocket piece at one time, perhaps even circulating briefly. It is not known where or when the gold plating was applied, and it is important to note that Pollock references copper examples only, not gilded examples of verifiable Mint origin. Judd's only comment is "occasionally gilt," without reference to origin.

Judd-257 is well known for its imaginative rendition of Liberty Seated, attributed to Mint Engraver Anthony Paquet. She supports a fasces with her right hand and a shield with her left. A symbolic eagle watches over her. Thirteen stars arch around her, but there are no inscriptions. On the reverse, a wreath of oak and laurel full surrounds the periphery, date and denomination within, as well as, the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Obverse nor reverse was ever implemented into regular production.

Here is a wonderful opportunity to secure a highly desirable Pattern, without paying the substantial premium that a Proof example would cost.
