Patterns 1858 Pattern Cent. Judd-211. Pollock-255. Rarity-7. Copper-Nickel. Plain Edge. NGC graded Proof 64. Reflective fields combine tan toning in the fields with golden mint brilliance around the devices. Additional violet highlights glitter upon reflection in the light. The regular Indian Head cent obverse used in 1859 is paired with a distinctive oak leaf wreath, ONE CENT within, different from any implemented on regular production cents.

When Proof coinage was first sold to the public in 1858, coin collectors took an immediate fancy to Pattern small cents then being made, following the overwhelming success of the Flying Eagle design in commerce. To accommodate demand, Mint Director James Ross Snowden authorized sales of Pattern cents in twelve-piece sets. Flying Eagle and Indian Head obverses were muled with a number of different potential wreath reverse designs. The complete set comprising 11 Patterns and a regular 1858 Flying Eagle cent presumably struck as a Proof. Pollock lists this die pair was part of the set, but gives it a much higher rarity rating than most others, which generally fall in the R-5 and R-6 categories. Estimate $1,250.00-$1,600.00
