In this year he initiated the sale of Proof coinage to the public, expanded the sale of Mint Medals to collectors and among other enterprising endeavors, sold sets of Patterns upon request. A favorite among pre-Civil War numismatists was a twelve-piece Pattern cent set, comprising mulings of Flying Eagle and Indian Head obverses with the various reverses then being engraved and considered for circulation.
