Pattern 1863 Two-Cents PR60
Patterns 1863 Pattern Two-Cents. Judd-308. Pollock-373. Rarity-7 to 8. Aluminum. Plain Edge. Proof 60. <b>Full luster. Surfaces show only light handling, but there is a 2mm notch in the planchet near 12 o'clock on the obverse and the corresponding reverse position, as struck. This famous Pattern depicts Washington on the obverse, facing right in a format copied from Jean Antoine Houdon's classic bust design first introduced in 1785 on the Washington Before Boston medal. The inscription GOD AND OUR COUNTRY arches above, date below. The reverse has a laurel wreath design similar to that adopted for regular use in 1864, denomination within. During the Civil War period, Washington was an extremely popular topic for patriotic medals and this coin was an early effort to memorialize him on a circulating coin, and idea that was rejected in favor of a shield. The inscription was also changed to IN GOD WE TRUST for business strike coinage, and was the first reference to the deity on American coinage. As a Rarity-7 to 8 Pattern, fewer than 12 are believed extant in all grades. In spite of its aforementioned defect, the popularity of the issue is immense, due to its topic and odd denomination. Here is a seldom encountered opportunity to secure a specimen which, while not the finest, is still a presentable and desirable rarity at a modest price.
