Painted in 1976 when Collins moved from Orne, Normandy, to "a roomy house that had seen better days in a small village near Nice, just across the valley from Louis le Brocquy." Frances Ruane has written of this work in particular: "The 1976 pictures, like Water Lily, Landfall and Table with Exotic Fruit, are airy and spring-like, lit by a bright French light ... Water Lily (1976), a subject undeniably associated with Monet, shimmers delicately as the light reveals layers of colour that seem to hover beneath the surface".
