Man Grubbing Up a Tree Root belongs to this period of his career, before the lonely bog landscape became such a prominent subject. The picture is a self contained vignette with the elongated figure of the man stooping to fit into the capsule-like composition. The tiny half-moon gives the impression of distance as it casts a wash of white light over its subject. Even the darkest shadows of the scene contain flecks of colour that bring the story to life.<BR>
