Passage To India Original Screenplay & Press Clippings
Passage To India Original Screenplay & Press Clippings - After an amazing string of masterpieces, including "Great Expectations", Hobson's Choice", "Oliver Twist", "The Bridge On The River Kwai", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Doctor Zhivago" and "Ryan's Daughter", legendary director David Lean went into a 14 year "period of development hell". He spent an exorbitant amount of time working on two features which would encompass the true story of the "Munity on the Bounty". At one point, devoted fans such as Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola even came to his side to try and get the films made. Finally however in 1983 Lean abandoned the project and instead adapted E. M. Forster's best selling novel "A Passage to India" into a screenplay. Forgoing his long time writing collaborator, Robert Bolt, he wrote the screenplay himself, and even went back to his roots and edited the film as well (he was a film editor in England before becoming a director). Bringing in some of his loyal crew such as his DP, Composer and "lucky charm" of an actor "Alec Guinness", he made the film in record time. It was a true love-poem to the cinema. Alas, this was his swan-song. Though he continued to work on projects literally to his last day on Earth, Lean never made another film and died in 1991. This is a rare early draft of Lean's adaption of the film to "A Passage To India". It was originally in the collection of one of the crew members, and includes carefully kept original press clippings, newspaper articles and reviews when the film came out, as well as other David Lean personal items, all of which were stored in the script. Also included is a personally signed Christmas Card from two of the crew members, each holding one of the original production clap-boards. Comes with a Letter of Provenience.
