Parian Figure of Lurline with Lyre and Swan
A finely modeled 19th-century Parian figure of Lurline, the Rhine water-nymph of German legend, shown seated beside a swan and holding a lyre. Draped in classical attire with long flowing hair and a garland crown, she is posed in serene contemplation upon a rocky base with wave and feather details. This figure is a reduction of the 1841 marble sculpture by W.K. Schwanthaler, originally commissioned for Prince Schwarzenberg of Vienna. The original marble remains at Castle Anif in Salzburg, with other notable versions at Somerleyton Hall, Suffolk and in bronze at Munich. The Parian version is illustrated in The Parian Phenomenon, page 147, fig. 505, and also featured in Robert Copeland's Parian: Copeland's Statuary Porcelain, fig. S98 - attesting to its popularity and sculptural refinement.
