Segment from a Mantle
Paracas
300 - 100 B.C.
Camelid fiber, cotton
Height 87 3/4 in. Width 18 1/8 in.

This mantle segment includes one long side of embroidered designs and small amounts of the two adjoining embroidered edges. The ground is a very dark brown plain weave and the embroidery is done in dark brown, deep red, and infrequent accents of gold. Two highly conventionalized dancer motifs alternate along the edge, and each motif repetition reverses orientation from those nearest in either direction. The condition is poor, with large loss areas in the undecorated portion as well as considerable losses in the embroidered areas.

Provenance
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7437E, 9 June 2003, lot 5132, pp.32-34, ill.p.32

Important notice:<
