Pappy Boyington & Other Aviators- Signed Books
Pair of Aviation Books Signed by Various Top Guns. World War II was really the birth of American aviation in the sense of success and fame. World War I saw its fair share of airborne combat, but it was not until World War II that squadrons of men became legends and celebrities in their own right. They flew the skies over China and Europe, being a menace to the Axis powers and showing the true prowess and skill of American aviation. After the success of the West during the conflict, many of the men were called on to write memoirs about their experiences. Due to the popularity of these books, many movies and spin offs were created to honor the brave pilots. This lot includes two books concerning a pair of squadrons who were active during the war. The first is: Pappy Boyington: Baa Baa Black Sheep. (Fresno: Wilson Press Inc., 1958), 19th printing, 384 pages, frontispiece photo of Boyington, inside covers feature many black and white photographs, original green cloth, silver lettering on spine, 5.5" x 8.75". Signed on the title page as: "May 3, 1986 - To Curt - With Best Wishes - Pappy Boyington". In fine condition; corners slightly bumped; head and tail lightly worn. A nice pair of books to commemorate two great squadrons who helped to establish America as one of the great Airborne combat forces.
John Toland: The Flying Tigers. (New York: Random House, 1963), 170 pages, 49 photographs, two inset maps, original cloth cover, photo cover, 5.75" x 8.5". Signed by twelve members of the 23rd Fighting Group: "Pappy" Boyington, Robert Scott, Lymon Davis, Billy Townsend, John Alison, Tex Hill, Forrest Palmer, Joe Rockhest, Don Lopez, Charles Bond Jr., and Chuck Older. The shark-faced planes these men used are some of the most iconic and well-known planes in history. One such plane is featured on the cover of this book, soaring through an orange sky over a jungle. In fine condition; bumped and rounded corners; head and tail slightly bumped. A wonderful book in its own right, but made even more collectible by the presence of these fantastic signatures.
