This antique papier mache snuff box has a beautiful horse and jockey design and the initials H.dep on the top. Sniffing snuff was the original method of taking tobacco, first used by the American Indians. Christopher Columbus noticed them sniffing a mysterious powder during his second voyage of discovery (1494-6) and brought the substance back to Europe. Snuff taking fast became the vogue among the Spanish and the French, although it only gained limited acceptance in England until Charles II brought the habit back from his exile in France. Boxes have been made from a wide variety of materials and we find today in private collections and museums, wonderful examples in gold and silver, brass and copper, pewter, jade and agate, mother-of-pearl, leather, papier mache, and numerous rare and beautiful woods. In very good plus condition it measures 1 inch high, 2 1/2 inches long and 1 3/8 inches wide. A great conversation piece and an addition to any Snuff Box or Tobacciana Collection.
SH & Ins. will be quoted after orders placed. If you have questions feel free to contact me and thank you for looking.
