Very rare. Baboquivari Mining District, Pima County. Inc. in Iowa. No. 963, issued for 1000 shares to W.F. Witherell on April 17th, 1880. Signed by president TW Crandall and secretary R.M. Roberts. Not cancelled. Very attractive design with silver-foil background, RN facsimile, and three vignettes: underground mining scenes (at right and left) and a Native American warrior (top center). Printed by Western Bank Note Engraving Co., Chicago. Deep folds, some staining. 8.25 x 11.25" Hamilton (1884, pg. 231) reports the property is some three miles north of the Quijotoas and has produced ore worth $1,000 per ton. The ledge is large and the ore free milling. The property is being fully developed. Balch (1882, pg. 1126) says the property consists of 3 claims totaling 50 acres. The ore is an argentiferous (silver-bearing) galena. Assays were $96 to $124 per ton. The length of the main lode is 500 feet with an average vein width of two feet. W.F. Witherell was born in New York in 1841. He attended West Point and was a cadet there when Abraham Lincoln was shot. Presumably, his title of Colonel was honorary, as he quickly became involved in various enterprises, as a businessman and entrepreneur, including mining ventures in Arizona, California, and Colorado. He carried on an extensive correspondence regarding the acquiring and selling of mining property, including assays of ore, and investigating the potential value of various mines and mining claims. He also acted as a middle man between owners of mines and potential investors.
