Panamint Polychrome Pictorial Basket
Circa 1930
Height 5 in. Diameter 7 in.

This fine and tightly woven coiled pictorial basket is decorated with large butterflies, bees, and birds perched on trees. "One aspect of coiled Panamint Shoshone basketry is its great diversity in form and design. Dramatic historical changes in the northern Mojave Desert, which began in the latter half of the 19th century with the arrival of miners, settlers, and eventually tourists, encouraged the creation of a new basket style, which more closely reflected the taste of the new Californians. The gradual transformation of basketry with geometric design made for the Indian's own use, to eventually small, colorful vessels with bird and butterfly illustrations made for the tourist trade was inevitable, because, as society changes, so will its art form."

Provenance
Sandra Horn, Mill Valley, California.
