Panamint Polychrome Cooking Basket
Panamint Polychrome Cooking Basket
Circa 1900
Height 7 1/4 in. Diameter 17 1/4 in.

This finely coiled polychrome bowl has an elaborate vertical design scheme consisting of inverted triangles in black (devil's claw) against a red (yucca root) background. The vertical bands are bordered with rows of right triangles with hooked diagonal lines coming off one angle. (This accent is often referred to as quail plumes or quail topknot feathers.) It is unlikely that this basket was ever used for mixing or cooking food. The sophisticated design and fine condition indicate it was made for sale.
