This area was originally inhabited by the Ute, Kiowa, Arapaho and Cheyenne Native American tribes. It was not settled by American immigrants until the 1858 Pike's Peak Gold Rush. John D. Perry, president of the Kansas Pacific Railroad, came to the area in 1870 and purchased 4,000 acres for a ranch. Perry created the Red Stone Town, Land and Mining Company in 1888 to develop the area as a resort. It was not a success.
