Palmer, J. C. THULIA: A TALE OF THE ANTARCTIC. New York: Samuel Coleman 1843 72pp. Twelve woodcut illus, several full page. Original blind & gilt stamped cloth, gilt vignette of the ship "Flying Fish" on front. Some moderate foxing, but mostly confined to end sheets & margins. A very good, superior copy, with much less foxing than is common.

Rosove 246.A2; Spence 890; Haskell 186 "The following is a true story of the incidents more minutely detailed in the Appendix, to which the reader is refered for a narrative prepared from the journals of the "Flying Fish". It is unfortunately happened that all these journals .... were .... lost .... So that the account which I wrote only for the gratifications of a few friends, has become the only remaining history of a highly interesting adventure" - preface. The "Flying Fish", a New York pilot boat, was one of the smaller ships of Wilkes' U.S. Exploring Expedition. The "incidents" describe the "Flying Fish's" cruise alone in Antarctic waters. The illustrations by A. T. Agate, one of the expedition's artists. See colour illustration.
