Rare view of Palisade in a very nice stereograph. Stereoview, including mount, measures 6 7/8”x3 3/8”, orange single matte, high contrast and focus is sharp. Photographer identified as John James Reilly. Reilly created a significant body of stereo views. His career began in New York where he shot Niagara Falls from 1866 to 1870. He traveled to Stockton in 1870 and produced western images until 1893 when he committed suicide. He worked mostly out of San Francisco, but was also the proprietor of Wood’s Gallery in Marysville, 1879-1886. While working in Yosemite from 1870-1875, Reilly became friend and companion of John Muir (Mautz). There is great clarity in this photograph of the idyllic setting of Palisade. Palisade came into existence as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. It is possible that Reilly took this photo in 1870 on his trip from New York to California. Palisade is located on the Humboldt River. In the photo, one can see a wooden bridge crossing the Humboldt. The town and station sit in the background with the Central Pacific Railroad running through the middle. Palisade became a jumping off point for miners heading to Mineral Hill, Eureka, Hamilton, and others. Construction of the Eureka & Palisade Railroad began in 1874, thus connecting the two towns.
