Palisade,NV - Eureka County - No Date - Vista of Palisade and Railroad Photograph :
Cabinet Card of the railroad town. Photograph measures 7 ¾”x4 ½”, single gray matte, 8 ½”x5 ¼”, medium contrast, and focus is sharp. Photograph tends toward the blacks on the periphery and the whites in the center. The matte has a minor tear on the left hand side and two small water stains on the upper left corner. In this photograph a train travels through the town of Palisade and the Humboldt River can be seen in the background. Palisade was established in 1870, soon after the transcontinental railroad was completed. Located ten miles southwest of the Carlin, Palisade’s existence has always depended heavily on the railroad. It also became a jumping off point for miners and prospectors in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The two story station seen in the photograph was built in 1884. It serviced both the Central Pacific and the Eureka & Palisade Railroads. Palisade’s waning importance in the early part of the twentieth century never recovered from the floods of 1910.
