The town was named for Cornishman James Pearce, miner and cattleman, who discovered gold at what became the Commonwealth Mine in 1894. The post office opened in 1896, the railroad station in 1903, and by 1919 the population reached 1,500. The town declined in the 1930s, becoming a ghost town in the late 1940s following the last mine closure. -56101
