Pair of unique and highly ornamented ivory stocked double-barrel Japanese percussion pistols, circa 19th century. 5-3/4” jointed cannon barrels, approx. 10”overall, with integral frames, and tangs made in one piece constructed of high bronze content brass, sometimes called naval brass. Brass triggerguards, iron hammers and top plate. With Japanese patinated ivory stocks that are finely incise carved in Samurai warrior motifs, probably by a master Netsuke carver. The pistols are approx. .32 caliber smoothbore. The left center portion of each pistol are stamped in Japanese characters which we believe would identify the maker and date, but we do not read Japanese. The grips show four scenes of Samurai in armor with swords and various attack positions. The carving is of finest quality and interesting to note that there are identifiable mons or royal crests on flags of armor, one of which is a chrysanthemum, indicating royal ownership. The stocks of these pistols are solid ivory and were patinated with pipe smoke, and the inside of each grip shows a three character signature. The pistols are in original fine condition, a few storage marks on the barrels, some normal cracking
