Pair of saw handled percussion dueling/target pistols signed W. J. & R.H. Scott, Albany on barrels and Warren & Steele, Albany on locks. The pistol’s measure 15 ½” overall with 10 ½” heavyweight barrels in .40 caliber smoothbore. The pair are half stocked in good quality plain walnut with a varnished finish and nickel silver or German silver mounts with pewter forend cap. The locks and barrels show a natural patina with some scattered light to moderate pitting and erosion also good markings and no evidence of cleaning. The stocks are very good plus and show slight scratches, minor dings, mars but retaining most of their original finish and a very good color and appearance. There is an old collection tag attached to each butt, one is numbered 909 the other 910. The pistols are equipped with period ramrod’s with German silver tips. Major Orbello was considered America’s expert on dueling pistols made in the United States and told this cataloger when we sold his collection that, “The most often asked question of him was what was the difference between target pistols and dueling pistols”. His answer was “That dueling pistols were used in a duel”. Dueling was basically illegal and the challenged party had his choice of weapons and usually used whatever was on hand. There was a strict code in Europe but America did not follow the rules as closely when tempers flared. Est.: $3,000-$6,000.
