Handwritten document on back side of a 1934" advertiser states “In 1854 in Downieville, Sierra [County], a miner was shot and killed over a dispute in a card game by a gambler named Patsy Callahan – using one of a pair of vest pocket derringers – with a Deringer in each hand he menaced the crowd with the loaded one and escaped in the darkness. Wm. F. Carrol (my wife’s father) a Deputy Sheriff and special Peace Officer traced [sic] him thru several mining camps – to Scott’s Bar in Siskiyou Co. Callahan was in a saloon seated in a card game. Carroll walked up to him- placed his hand on his shoulder and told him he was under arrest – the gambler reached for his derringers – but Carroll overpowered him, handcuffed him and took him back to Downieville where he was tried, convicted and hung. These Derringers were introduced in evidence and were afterwards presented to Carroll who 40 years later gave them to me. They have been in my possession for 40 years until I parted with them to Mrs.
