Pair of percussion dueling/target pistols signed “W. H. Smith & Co. New York” on both barrel and lock. .46 caliber smoothbore. 9-1/2” barrel of medium weight. 16-1/2” overall, half stocked. Engraved iron mounts, single set trigger, German silver escutcheon and forend cap. The pistols remains in good original condition show a deep brown patina finish with traces of brown striping on the barrel and traces of case hardening visible on the lock. There is some scattered erosion and pinprick pitting and scaling, dried oil on the barrel. The stock is good with many small scratches and mars in the varnish, a gouge on the right side by escutcheon, good crisp checkering, some minor imperfections. The triggerguard and buttcap are nicely engraved and show considerable original color. An original to the period horn tipped ramrod is included. The front of the hammer shows a slight age crack on one pistol. The action is good, the pistol shows double bands at breech. The mate is in slightly better condition with smoother barrel and more pronounced case coloring on the lock and shows an expertly replaced period hammer that is very difficult to discern except for engraving does not quite match.
