Pair of ornate and massive American dueling/target pistols by Haslett of Baltimore, converted from flintlock. Originally made about 1805, converted to percussion about 1830. The pair measure nearly 16” overall with 8-3/8’s extra heavy octagon barrels of approx. .60 caliber smooth bore, measuring 1-1/8” across the flats of the octagon barrels. And show almost a quarter inch of “meat” on each side of the bore. Each pistol weighs approx. 4lbs. The barrels show two sets of gold bands at the breeches and gold lightning bolts on each side of the breech plus. The barrels show the name “Haslett” and “Baltimore” engraved in fancy gold scrolls. The locks show gold inlaid maker’s cartouche, with name Haslett. The locks and mou are all finely engraved and the engraving on the hammer and bolster and at the breech and tang all match very well and most probably converted by Haslett in the percussion era. The barrels show approx. 90-95% original striped tobacco brown finish. The locks show 60-70% grayish case hardening with traces of colors, particularly on the breeches. The triggerguards show traces of blue and what appear to be copper stands of flags. The escutcheons around the barrel key are silver,
