Pair of original flintlock officer’s pistols signed “Boutet, Directeur Artist” on barrels and “Manuf. a Versailles” on locks. The pair measure approx. 14-1/4” overall, with 8-1/2” flared octagon barrels that are swamped at the muzzles and are .54 caliber smoothbore. The pair are full-stocked with nicely checkered grips, show plain steel mounts, engraved with fancy intertwined initials which appear to be TJB or JB on butts. The barrels show three small maker’s proof marks: CB, NB, and LC. The barrels show gold banding at breech and muzzle and gold maker’s marks. The pair show finely engraved screwheads and escutcheons and otherwise the metal is plain. We would identify them as officer’s type. The barrels show 80-90% thinning original blue finish, some slight erosion and pinprick pitting, beginning age, some erosion around the touch holes. The locks and mount show their original bright finish, dried oil and staining, but absolutely no cleaning. The pair are in their original flintlock configuration with correct hammers, small parts, springs, and the locks show fine detail work on the screws and springs, which shows Boutet quality. The stocks are near fine
