Pair of iron frame Southerner Derringer’s in .41 rimfire caliber manufactured by Merrimack Arms Company, with consecutive serial numbers and originally period inscribed “Presented to Col. Polk by Friends” on the back straps, serialnumbers for 4284 and 4283. Col. Cadwallader Polk is listed as a notable commander of the 39th Arkansas infantry Regiment which was a provisional army of the Confederate states. The unit was known for a time as Polk’s Regiment of Arkansasinfantry serving under Gen. Sterling Price in the trans-Mississippi rifle regiments. Notable battles for this Regiment were Prairie Grove, Helena, Little Rock, Jenkins Ferry and many others. Cadwallader Polk served with distinction in manybattles and is mentioned constantly in the regimental records. The pair remains in fair to good condition showing light to moderate pitting and erosion with some slightly heavier pitting on the edge of the frames from being carried next tothe body. The “Southerner” markings are legible and makers marking on the left side of the breech are mostly visible. The grips are good. Inscribed pairs of consecutive early cartridge derringers are rare and consecutive pairs are seldom offered
