Pair of cased dueling/target pistols by J. H. Happoldt, Charleston South Carolina. With medium to heavy weight octagon barrels, measuring 9-1/2” in length, pistols 15-3/4” overall of .45 caliber smoothbore. The pair are half stocked in good quality walnut with typical Happoldt checkering flattened sides. The pistols show plain mounts, adjustable set triggers, silver barrel key escutcheon and shield shaped plaque at wrist. The pair show a full blue finish, which was applied at time of use and approx. 50-70% remains. Areas where blue have lifted show some light erosion and pinprick pitting. The stocks are very good plus with crisp checkering. The markings are sharp, the edges are crisp. The stock show just some wear at the edges, small marks, and are a nearly exact pair. The case contains correct mold, period flask, rods, mallet, small accessories. The case is lined in green baize or felt and shows some wear at contact points and fraying at the edges and is generally good. The exterior of the case is a veneered hardwood with brass screws and fittings and is also good with some scratches, mars, normal aging. The owner’s plaque in lid has been removed.
