Pair of animated plump Bob White quail by Arnold
Pair of animated plump "Bob" White quail by Arnold Melbye. Both are in superb original condition in all respects. There are a few minor scratches on the original circular bases which appear to be made of maple. Signed on the bottom of both by Melbye and dated 1946. Some glue has been added to the bottom of the feet to keep the birds from spinning on the mounts. Cape Cod, home of America's famous pioneer decoy and decorative bird carver/artist Anthony Elmer Crowell, can also take great pride in Arnold Melbye, a man of immense talent from South Yarmouth that followed in Crowell's footsteps in the mid to early 1900's. This artist was called by many of his peers, the "dean of versatile bird carving". In "Masters of American Bird Carving" by Anne Small, where the aforementioned quote was found, Mrs. Small states further, that Arnold Melbye "has brought the sure touch of chisel and paint brush to his earliest carvings of lifesize flying ducks done in the 1930's and 1940's and to the gamebirds, shorebirds, and songbirds which have become his forte" "Lem Ward once penned, "I never dreamed that I would meet all the great carvers of our country…the snapshot of Melbye, Gilley, and myself will be framed and placed where I can tell people who come into my shop, Look at this. Here I am pictured with two of the greatest carvers of our country. (decoy)
