Pair of Wedgwood Etruria Queen's Ware Dessert Plates
This pair of dessert plates is crafted from fine cream-colored earthenware, known as Queen's Ware, produced by Wedgwood at the Etruria works in England. Each plate features a central, hand-painted fruit still-life motif; one depicts a composition of plums and a pear, while the other features peaches and cherries. The central decoration is signed on the lower right with the hand-painted characters A-J.Birks, attributing the work to artist Arthur J. Birks. The plates are designed with a raised, scalloped-edge rim featuring an embossed foliate and grape vine pattern in relief, over which copper luster scrollwork has been applied. The reverse of each plate bears a red printed factory mark reading WEDGWOOD over a line, followed by ETRURIA ENGLAND. Additionally, the alphanumeric code C.5344 is hand-painted in a blue-green pigment, accompanied by small marks in purple and red. Each plate also carries a collection label from the Rubin Collection, which dates the pieces to circa 1928. Dimensions: 1.00"H x 9.00" dia.
