Rare Set of Two Small Child’s Size Slave Hand-Forged “Rattle” Type Shackles Used for the American Slave Trade
c. 1800s to Mid 19th Century, Pair of Two, Hand-Forged Iron, Child’s Size Slave Shackles, with Internal “Rattles” Within, Very Fine.
This historic Set of Child Size Slave Shackles are of African production for the International and American Slave Trade, also found located in the United States. These are described as being, “Crab-shaped Rattler Leg Shackles,” as illustrated on pages 20-21, in the reference book “THE ART AND HISTORY OF BLACK MEMORABILIA” by Larry Vincent Buster. They measures 1. 6” x 5.25” with an opening of 4.75” x 2.75” and number 2. 8” x 5.25” with an opening of 4.75” x 2.5”. Based upon the circumference of their openings, these appear to be of size used to shackle Children.

The oddly-shaped hand-wrought devices contain lateral "pockets" that contain pieces of metal or balls, that “Rattle” as the wearer moves about. Wearing this type also helped to insure that the wearer’s location could more easily be determined by the sound of the “Rattle” being made. Each shackle has a pair of small chain links attached at the top. One shackle was placed on each leg and a chain would be threaded through the attached rings and secured with a lock.
