Pair of Suffrage First Oval Pinbacks
Pair of "Suffrage First" Oval Pinbacks, each 16mm x 27mm. The "Suffrage First" slogan came from Alice Paul's National Woman's Party, organized in 1916. Paul and her organization believed that the first priority of Congress in 1917 was the issue of voting rights for women and that all other issues should accordingly be put aside until it was attained. The blue, white, and gold pin is somewhat of an enigma. Its backpaper reveals that it was made by the National Woman Suffrage Publishing Company. The publishing company was created in 1914 by the National Woman Suffrage Association. The militant NWP was often at odds with its more conservative counterpart, NAWSA, and it appears unusual that they would use its rival's publishing house to manufacture one of their pins. At any rate, this oval badge is in very fine condition and one of the more attractive suffrage lapel items. Its oval companion pin in green, black, and white was made by Bastian Brothers of Rochester, New York. Also containing the slogan developed by Alice Paul's National Woman's Party, this pin is not in their traditional colors of purple (sometimes blue), white, and gold. This pin is scarcer than its companion. Slight staining in the field, else very fine condition.

Shipping: Small Collectibles (view shipping information)
