Pair of Southern dueling/target pistols signed in script on locks J. M. Happoldt, Charleston SC, with period American made unusual cabinet style casing. The pistols measure approx. .38 caliber smoothbore with medium to heavy weight octagon barrels measuring 9-7/8” in length. 15-1/4” overall. The pair show good quality walnut half stocks with typical Happoldt styling with flattened grip and checkered sides, plain iron mounts, single set triggers, keyed barrels. The pistols show a deep brown patina finish with some light erosion and pinprick pitting just starting. The stocks are good. One pistol shows some darkening from oiling and a loss of wood at top edge, approx. 1/4” by 1/2 on left side. Its" mate’s stock is slightly better, just showing even wear and use. The pair are contained within an interesting American made cabinet type casing with dovetail corners, good cabinetry work, and is made to stand up vertically or possibly attached to a wall. The interior of the case is lined in a coarse felt or baize which is glued over wood. The interior of the case is in good condition showing some mothing and fraying and is definitely genuine to the 19th century. There is a large
