Pair of Silver Accented Japanese Abumi-Style Stirrups

Produced for use with the kura style military saddle, abumi were an important piece of equipment for samurai fighting on horseback. Deviating from Western designs, the stirrup is fully open on the sides and back while providing a platform for the entire foot, allowing the user to stand in the saddle while reducing the risk of the rider being caught and dragged in the event of being bucked or otherwise dislodged from the seat. Construction is iron, 4 3/4 inches wide and 9 1/4 inches tall, with a red lacquer finish to the interior and a set of integral buckles. The front, sides and underside of the stirrups are decorated with silver inlays, chiefly in floral vine patterns with the fronts showing a large Imperial Chrysanthemum. No makers marks are visible.
