Two stately chairs of traditional form with classical proportions

This pair of Chinese horseshoe chairs dates back to 19th century and was crafted from Jumu wood. The armrests are shaped in the form of a horseshoe and supported by three round side bars which are connected with the solid rectangular seats. This typical design is one of the most distinctive of the Chinese furniture tradition. The back splats are each decorated with a medallion depicting a carved décor. The legs are connected with straight bars which served as a footrest. The front and side aprons are elegantly curved. The chairs have a simple shape that reveals the lovely grain of the wood, which features a light brown color with light nuances of yellow. Chairs of this kind were status symbols reserved for judges, senior officials and guests of honor.

The chairs are in good condition with slight signs of age and wear. The chairs have a back height of 96 cm, a seat height of 54 cm, a seat depth of 46 cm and a width of 55.5 cm.
