Pair of English center-hammer flintlock muff pistols by James Wilkinson of London in their original leather covered carrying case with accessories. The pistols measure approx 6” overall with 1-1/2” barrels of approx. .50 caliber smooth bore. The pair remain in very good plus original condition showing considerable blue on barrels drifting to patina, drifting case colors on actions, some just beginning erosion and natural aging and very minor pinprick pitting. The triggers and small parts show considerable blue and case hardening. The fames are nicely engraved with name and London in banners. The pistols are in their original flintlock configuration with proper hammer topjaw, screws, small parts, etc. The bag shape wood grips show a burl wood grain and are in very good plus to near fine condition with just some minor marks and light handling. The pair are contained within their rare and original green felt lined travelling case which has 3 loops for extra flints by each pistol compartment, and original scissor style mold for these pistol is secured to the lid, a batty flask of proper size with bullet compartments for .50 caliber balls also is within its own provision in the case. The original combination loader/barrel key is also retained in another compartment. The leather cover of the case is in good condition for its age which we would date about 1800-1820, shows some cracking, small losses, and normal aging but is generally sound. The tab shows a glued repair. These pistols would have been perfect for traveling by coach or by sea and are just a convenient size to be carried upon a person’s lap. Est.: $2,500-$5,000
