wearing the early state-issue gray uniform. The Badger is armed with a musket, oval US plate, and newly issued leather gear. The distinctive single-breasted jacket with eight state seal buttons was procured in New York for the 4th, 5th, and 6th Regiments. It was made with waist loops and was trimmed in black around the collar and epaulettes with a black cuff slash. A similar jacket produced locally in Wisconsin was worn by the 7th and 8th Regiments.

The early gray-clad regiments wore a slightly different style of headgear and were armed with different types of weapons. This anonymous soldier is probably from the 4th Wisconsin based on his plain forage cap in combination with what appears to be a M1842 musket initially issued to the regiment. Wisconsin regiments traded in their gray uniforms for blue in August 1861.

Condition: Both plates are EXC. with strong clarity, one housed in a figural gutta percha case, the other in a partial composition case.
