A pair of tea caddies with copper bodies, decorated in the red-and-black carved lacquer technique. The surfaces are richly adorned with scrolling floral and foliate motifs, demonstrating layered carving and striking color contrast between red and black lacquer. The form is elegant and balanced, with the rarity of being preserved as a pair. Carved lacquer, renowned for its labor-intensive process of building up and carving through multiple layers of lacquer, was highly prized from the Ming through the Republic period. These caddies serve both as functional tea containers and as fine collectible artworks.
