Pair of American percussion dueling or target pistols signed E. Midnight who was a eastern New Jersey maker of German descent that changed his name to sound more American. The pair measures 13 ¼” overall with 7 1/8” octagon barrels of approximately .36 caliber smoothbore. The pistols are half stock in good quality Walnut with fine checkering and raised carved fancy borders. The trigger guard mounts are lightly engraved German silver in a style matching to the engraving on the lock plates and also to the carving in the stocks. The pair remains in original fine condition retaining most of their original bright tobacco brown finish on the barrels with bright original case hardening showing on locks and tangs. The pair show just some very slight aging and are numbered 1 and 2. Two research folders full of information on this maker and these pistols is included and to summarize this is the only known pair and there are only a couple of singles known by this eastern New Jersey maker.
