Pair of .50 caliber percussion saw-handled dueling/target pistols attributed to John Mullin, New York, circa approx. 1841. Barrels engraved “Dr. Simon Taylor, South Carolina” by maker. The pair belonged to Dr. Taylor, a South Carolina plantation owner and delegate to the confederate congress. By tradition the guns were taken from the Taylor plantation by General John Logan during General William T. Sherman’s Civil War campaign. Refer page 18, The Code of Honor: Dueling in America by Ellen N. Murry, which features the collection of Col. Orbelo. The pair remain in original good condition showing a light grey patina finish with traces of striping on barrels, strong evidence of case hardening on locks, some minor erosion and pinprick pitting just starting. The locks and mounts are nicely engraved with double gold bands at sat the breech and show double gold platinum blowout plugs. The pistols are equipped with adjustable set triggers, half stocked in select walnut, nicely checkered at the wrist. The stocks remain in very good condition with 80-90% varnish, good checkering, some minor marks and wear at the edges, storage scratches. The triggerguards show 20-30% original blue. The
