Pair of late 1850's steel engravings of Revolutionary War, Continental Army Generals - Major General Henry Knox & Senior General Benjamin Lincoln. 6" X 10". * some light foxing on each. Henry Knox, (1750-1806), was an American military leader, born in Boston who fought as a volunteer with the American forces at Bunker Hill and at the subsequent siege of British-occupied Boston. Commander in chief George Washington made Knox a brigadier general the same year and placed him in charge of the artillery of the American army. Knox took part in many of the major engagements of the Revolution, including the battles of Princeton and Monmouth and the siege of Yorktown. He became a major general in 1781; from 1782 to 1784 he was in command of the fortress of West Point, New York. Knox was secretary of war from 1785 to 1789 in the government established under the Articles of Confederation; he remained in this office from 1789 to 1794, during the administration of George Washington, as the first secretary of war under the U.S. Constitution. Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810) was an American army officer who served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Lincoln was involved in three major surrenders during the war: his participation in the Battles of Saratoga, oversaw the largest American surrender of the war at the 1780 Siege of Charleston, and, as George Washington's second in command, he formally accepted the British surrender at Yorktown. He served from 1781 to 1783 as the first United States Secretary of War.Â
