<td width="100%">
Amazing condition if you consider that these plates are almost 200 years old...I believe these to be Japanese although the Chinese have been making lacquer wares and art for possibly 1000's of years (apparently so have the Japanese)...Lacquer is a actual tree which grows all over china (and other asian places) and the sap is retreave to use as a finish ( a lot of japanese lacquer is from the tree known as Urushi)...As the story goes the Japanese picked up the art of making utiilitarian wares from the chinese around the middle of the 18th century and cinnibar was a common color...the gold color was atained by mixing actual gold with lacquer and painting it on (which I think is the method on this set) and the other was to sprinkle it on the wet lacquer then one fine layer of clear lacquer was applied
