This pair of vintage vinyl upholstered side chairs in renaissance revival style date from the early 20th century, and come straight from a synagogue in Brooklyn NY. Each measures 42.5" tall by 21" wide by 21" deep. Each has been refinished, and as is common with the Jewish orthodox religion, the synagogue removed the figural design from the center of the crestrail. This area likely depicted the head and body of a cherub. Star of David decorates this center section on one of the two chairs. Hand-carved crestrails feature elaborate scrolling designs, flowers (like English wild roses) and a figure holding a platter of fruit.

Additional images forwarded upon request.

These chairs were owned by Rabbi Charles Kahane of Brooklyn NY, who was a leader in the Revisionist Zionist movement and a friend of Zev (Vladimir) Jabotinsky. He was father to Meir David Kahan (1932-1990), who is widely known for his founding of the Jewish Defense League (JDL).
Proof of provenance can be provided upon request.
