On his 89th birthday, the Zen monk Tatsumaro composed this reverential Zenga (Zen painting) of Daruma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. Simple flying white brushstrokes are used to outline the master's robe, while soft gray washes are lovingly applied to give us the details of Daruma's face. In the poem that accompanies the picture, Tatsumaro also pays tribute to Bosatsu and sings an ode to discipline. Mount: 57.5 x 16.5 inches, 146 x 42 cm. Painting: 33.5 x 14 inches, 85 x 36 cm
