This lot consists of a two volume set containing Thomas Paine's (b.1737-d.1809) complete political works. According to Wikipedia, "Thomas Paine was an English-born American political activist, philosopher, political theorist and revolutionary...he authored the two most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution and inspired the rebels in 1776 to declare independence from Britain. In 1856, J.P. Mendum, Investigator Office, Boston published Paine's complete political works, as well as a brief biographical sketch in this two volume set. The books on which you are bidding were published at that time--there is a handwritten name on the original endpapers each of the books with the date 1857. These books have subsequently been professionally rebound and show excellent condition. The books each measure 5.5" x 9" and are 5/8" thick.
