<B>Page from an Illuminated Thirteenth Century French Bible</B></I> <BR>Paris, France. <BR>Mid-13th century.<BR>6"x4" leaf, 12-1/2" x 15" frame.<BR>Opening page from the Epsitle Book of James in Latin with a four-line decorated initial "N" (for the prologue), and a nine-line historiated initial "J" (Jacobus) of the standing saint with a gold leaf halo. The text is in two columns with rubricated initials and tracery in red and blue ink. During the 13th century Paris, with its famed university, was the most important center in Europe for manuscript illumination. Countless Bibles like this one were produced there for clerics, laity, and students.
